Cornershop did have a career before Fatboy Slim added some unremarkable beats to the otherwise beautiful ‘Brimful Of Asha’. In fact the Leicester natives were the darlings of the British indie press for several years up to this point. Celebrated releases such as ‘In The Days Of Ford Cortina’ EP and ‘Woman’s Gotta Have It’ LP meant that all they needed was a spark to ignite interest. Luckily for them that spark came as they were about to release their masterpiece ‘When I Was Born For The 7th Time’. The album is a hypnotic integration of the bands Indian heritage with their contemporary pop sensibilities. There are not many albums out there that can successfully incorporate the Tamboura, Sitar, Harmonica and a myriad of electronic machines but Cornershop pull it off with consummate ease. ‘Sleep On The Left Side’ offers a distinct loping persuasion, chiselled by a broad bass tug and neat psychedelic edges. Tjinder Singh’s velvet tones deserve special mention for the way their laidback effervescence boosts the notion that this is the musical expression of a dozy Sunday afternoon. KD
