Bawl - Mechanic From Rhyll
Bawl have been lost to the mists of time or more pertinently by its members who seemed for quite a time to be in a constant state of flummox thinking up new names for the band. Such energy would have been better dispelled on writing a follow-up to Bawl’s lavish debut ‘Year Zero’ for here was an album full of indie pop gems. Not only that but the melodies also served to colour lyrics showcasing the language of everyday life. ‘Mechanic From Rhyll’ is an absolutely magic rendering of human frailty against the backdrop of gorgeous audio and proved what a strong songwriter Mark Cullen was when he concentrated on the job in hand. Bawl became Fixed Stars and then morphed into Pony Club who are now, sadly, inactive. KD

I was a fan of Bawl back in the day. They always seemed to be derided for not being as good as Pulp. Glen Campbell Nights was a great song, which I don't think was on Year Zero.
I really thought they are were a great singles band, some class b-sides too.
Apparently it won't be too long till the new Pony Club album comes out including the excellent Diplomat single. He is performing as part fo the Fringe fest on Weds night in Iveagh Gardens. Can't wait for the new album.
