Hot Club De Paris - Who Am I?

Lost amid the hyperbole (some deserved) surrounding the Arctic Monkeys are a much more enticing prospect by the name of Hot Club De Paris. A pair of Smith siblings and Paul Rafferty makes up the trio from Liverpool. It might be best to take your first steps with the band in a live setting, straight off the record they can be a tad overwhelming. Live they have a hypnotic presence and their continual search for the hard way out when it comes to playing their instruments can be a breathless experience. Hot Club De Paris are adept at cloaking indie’s grand traditions through frenetic chord arrangements, off-kilter clouds of inventive rhythms and machine gun like vocal deliveries. ‘Who Am I?’ is taken from their debut album and trips from the speakers like a 17 year old high on his 3rd cider. The lyrics are a tad messy, enjoyably so because it’d be a shame for anything to detract from the sparkling instrumentation. I bet it sounds good on the dancefloor too. KD
